AI firm Midjourney has launched its first image-to-video model, V1, enabling users to animate still pictures into short video clips. The launch comes shortly after legal action from Disney and Universal over alleged copyright violations.

Midjourney, renowned for its unique AI-generated imagery, has now entered the AI video space with the introduction of its V1 model. The tool converts static images — either user-uploaded or created using Midjourney’s AI — into five-second video clips. Users can choose between manual and auto motion settings, with further control over movement intensity and duration (extendable up to 21 seconds).

Available exclusively on Discord and limited to web access at launch, V1 mirrors Midjourney’s typical surreal visual style. The model is significantly more resource-intensive, using eight times the credits of image generation tools. Pricing begins at $10 per month, but unlimited video creation is reserved for higher-tier plans costing $60 and $120 monthly — both restricted to slower “Relax” mode generation.

Midjourney CEO David Holz announced that V1 is just the beginning, hinting at future advancements in real-time simulations and 3D rendering capabilities. However, the pricing model may evolve as user feedback is collected.

The launch coincides with a legal challenge from entertainment giants Disney and Universal, who allege that Midjourney’s models can generate unlicensed images of iconic characters like Homer Simpson and Darth Vader. These lawsuits are part of a broader industry pushback against AI content creation tools, citing concerns about copyright and job displacement in creative sectors.

Despite the controversy, early feedback on V1 has been largely positive, with users praising the flexibility and artistic results — even as Midjourney gears up to compete with other AI video titans like OpenAI, Runway, Adobe, and Google.
