Azor, Israel: Tensions escalated sharply on the eighth day of the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict as Iran launched a missile carrying a cluster bomb warhead targeting central Israel. According to military sources, the missile exploded mid-air at an altitude of about 7 kilometers (approximately 4 miles), releasing around 20 submunitions over a 5-mile (8-kilometer) radius.

One of these smaller munitions struck a residential structure in the central Israeli town of Azor, causing some property damage. However, no casualties were reported, as per Times of Israel’s military correspondent Emanuel Fabian.

Cluster bombs have long been criticized due to their indiscriminate scattering of submunitions, some of which often remain unexploded, posing severe risks to civilians even after hostilities end. In response to the incident, the Israeli military published a warning graphic highlighting the dangers of unexploded ordnance.

Brigadier General Effie Defrin, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, stated: “The terror regime seeks to harm civilians and even used weapons with wide dispersal in order to maximize the scope of the damage.”

Neither Iran’s mission to the United Nations nor Israel’s embassy in Washington provided immediate responses to media queries regarding the strike.

Daryl Kimball, Executive Director of the Arms Control Association, condemned the use of such weapons: “They are egregious weapons with their wide-area destruction, especially if used in a civilian populated area and could add to the unexploded ordnance left over from conflicts.” He further noted that Iran’s missile accuracy remains questionable, raising concerns about unintended civilian impacts.

Neither Israel nor Iran are signatories to the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits the production, stockpiling, transfer, and use of such weapons. The treaty has been endorsed by 111 countries and 12 other entities. In a controversial decision in 2023, the United States supplied cluster munitions to Ukraine for use against Russian forces, while reports indicate that Russia has also employed them.
