Google Expands Earthquake Alerts to WearOS Smartwatches: Life-Saving Updates on Your Wrist

Google-Expands-Earthquake-Alerts-to-WearOS-Smartwatches

In a groundbreaking move to enhance public safety, Google is now extending its Android Earthquake Alerts system to WearOS smartwatches. This means users wearing devices like the Samsung Galaxy Watch or other WearOS-powered smartwatches will soon receive real-time earthquake alerts right on their wrists.

Originally launched in 2020, Google’s earthquake alert feature is a sophisticated system that detects seismic activity by analyzing motion sensors from millions of Android phones. When it detects potential earthquakes, it sends users vital details—such as the quake’s magnitude and the distance from the epicentre—giving them a crucial early warning.

Now, the same alert system is coming to WearOS. According to recent updates on the Google System Release Notes page, users will “get alerts on Wear when an earthquake is expected to cause shaking.” While Google hasn’t officially announced the feature, Android Authority found evidence of it during an APK teardown, indicating that the update is likely part of Google Play Services version 25.21.

How Will It Work?
When the system detects seismic activity, compatible smartwatches will vibrate with an alert—mirroring what currently happens on smartphones. Users will be notified with the earthquake’s strength, distance, and a warning that shaking is imminent. It’s a feature that could prove vital in situations where the phone isn’t easily accessible—like during a workout, while cooking, or when the phone is charging in another room.

Why It Matters
Earthquakes strike without warning, especially in high-risk regions like India. Even a few seconds of early notice can help people move to safer locations, potentially saving lives. With this expansion to smartwatches, Google is significantly increasing the reach and effectiveness of its early warning system.

As Google continues rolling out this feature, smartwatch users can expect another layer of safety—one that could make all the difference when every second counts.
