India Covid-19 Update Today:
India is witnessing a fresh rise in Covid-19 cases in 2025, with active cases climbing to 6,815 as of Wednesday morning, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. So far this year, 68 Covid-related deaths have been recorded, while 7,644 individuals have recovered from the virus.

National Overview:

  • Active cases: 6,815
  • Total deaths in 2025: 68
  • Recoveries this year: 7,644
  • New deaths (last 24 hrs): 3

Worst-Hit States:

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, with a caseload of 2,053, followed by:

  • Gujarat: 1,223
  • Delhi: 757
  • West Bengal: 747

Delhi alone recorded 104 new cases in the past 24 hours and currently has 691 active cases.

New Variant Concerns:

The surge is attributed to Omicron sub-variants such as JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. These variants are said to have higher transmissibility but milder symptoms, and are currently classified by WHO as “Variants Under Monitoring”.

While SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate, it no longer poses the same unpredictable risk as before and now mirrors seasonal flu-like patterns, experts say.

Government Response and Advisories:

UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak emphasized that there is no cause for panic.

“The virus currently shows mild symptoms—mostly cold and fever. Only the elderly and patients with serious conditions need to be careful,” he said, adding that oxygen plants and hospital infrastructure have been prepped adequately.

In Kerala, Health Minister Veena George advised caution for the elderly and those with co-morbidities.

“The variants LF.7 and XFG are widespread in the state. They are not severe but can spread quickly. Mask usage in public and during travel is advisable,” she said.

Latest Fatalities:

Delhi reported the death of a 90-year-old woman with pre-existing health conditions like respiratory acidosis, CCF, and CKD. The Health Ministry clarified that the primary cause of death was co-morbidities, and Covid-19 was an incidental finding.

Urban vs Rural Spread (Flashback):

In past waves, especially May 2021, a survey had shown urban areas accounted for 68% of hospitalizations, with rural areas contributing 32%.
