India reaffirms commitment to BRICS and Global South partnerships as PM Modi embarks on visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on a significant diplomatic mission on July 2, 2025, covering five nations across three continents—Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to BRICS and efforts to build a “peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order.”

The week-long tour from July 2 to 9 will include bilateral engagements, multilateral meetings, and the BRICS summit in Brazil. Sharing a video message before departure, PM Modi reiterated that India, as a founding member, sees BRICS as a vital platform for emerging economies to collaborate on global challenges.

Ghana: Strengthening African Ties

The Prime Minister’s first stop is Ghana, where he will be on July 2 and 3. He is scheduled to meet President John Dramani Mahama and address the Ghanaian Parliament. Calling Ghana a “valued partner in the Global South,” PM Modi highlighted areas of cooperation including investment, energy, health, security, capacity building, and development.

Trinidad and Tobago: Celebrating Shared Heritage

Following Ghana, PM Modi will visit Trinidad and Tobago, hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar. The visit coincides with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian indentured labourers to the Caribbean nation. Modi said the trip is an opportunity to “rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship.” President Christine Carla Kangaloo of Trinidad and Tobago was notably the Chief Guest at this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

Argentina: A Historic Visit

In Buenos Aires, PM Modi will undertake the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years. Describing Argentina as a “key economic partner in Latin America” and a close G20 ally, Modi said discussions with President Javier Milei will focus on agriculture, critical minerals, trade, energy, technology, and tourism.

Brazil: BRICS and Bilateral State Visit

Modi’s Brazil visit spans two major cities. He will participate in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7, engaging with global leaders on strengthening multipolarity and South-South cooperation. Post-summit, PM Modi will head to Brasilia for a bilateral State visit—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades. He is expected to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to deepen ties and advance shared priorities.

Namibia: A Historic Friendship

On his return journey, PM Modi will stop in Namibia, a country he praised for its long-standing relationship with India and its historic decolonization struggle. He is slated to meet Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and will address a Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament.

Reaffirming India’s Global Role

Reflecting on the journey ahead, PM Modi stated, “I am confident that my visits to the five countries will reinforce our bonds of friendship across the Global South, strengthen our partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements in multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM.”
