Kerala on Red Alert: Rain Lashes Districts, Holidays Declared for Schools
The southwest monsoon continues to pummel Kerala, with red alerts issued in multiple districts. Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kottayam have all declared holidays for educational institutions on Monday, June 16.
Kozhikode experienced severe gusty winds and heavy rainfall, prompting warnings of flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. In central Travancore, heavy rainfall led to two deaths—one in Konni, Pathanamthitta, and another in Erumely, Kottayam.
Youth Drowns in Kannur Amid Red Alert Conditions
Tragedy struck Kannur as a 21-year-old youth drowned in Ayinivayal pond while bathing with friends. This marks the seventh drowning in the district in just 15 days, raising concerns amid persistent rainfall.
Karnataka: Multiple Districts on Holiday as Rain Batters Region
In Karnataka, incessant rains lashed Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Shivamogga districts. Udupi and Dakshina Kannada declared a school holiday following a red alert from IMD. An orange alert is also in effect for Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts.
A tragic incident was reported in Shivamogga’s Adugadi village, where a 100-year-old woman died and two others were injured in a house wall collapse due to heavy rainfall.

Bengaluru is once again grappling with the pothole menace. Key roads like Kanakapura Road have become unmotorable due to the rains. Citizens are voicing concerns on social media about the deteriorating road conditions and lack of effective civic response.

Maharashtra, Gujarat on Alert for Intense Rainfall
