Northeast Flood Crisis: PM Modi Assures Full Support as Assam, Sikkim, Manipur Battle Devastating Deluge

Severe floods and landslides have battered parts of Northeast India, leaving a trail of devastation across Assam, Manipur, and Sikkim. The calamity has impacted lakhs of residents, destroyed homes, and claimed multiple lives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally reached out to state leaders to offer central assistance and support for ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
PM Modi Connects with Northeast Leadership
Prime Minister Modi held conversations with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla. Following these discussions, he assured comprehensive support from the Centre in managing the crisis.
Taking to social media, CM Sarma shared that the Prime Minister expressed deep concern and pledged full cooperation:
“I briefed him on the situation caused by continuous rainfall and its impact on the people. The Hon’ble PM assured all possible assistance from the Central Government.”
CM Tamang of Sikkim also thanked PM Modi via X for his concern, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to helping affected communities.
Assam: Over 5 Lakh Affected, 11 Dead
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods and landslides have claimed 11 lives — 6 due to flooding and 5 due to landslides. One person drowned in Hojai in the last 24 hours, while two others are reported missing in Hailakandi and Dibrugarh districts.
As many as 5.15 lakh people across 22 districts have been affected. Among the worst-hit areas are Sribhumi (over 1.94 lakh affected), Cachar, Nagaon, and Lakhimpur. Over 254 villages have been submerged across 65 revenue circles.
The government has established 322 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering nearly 1.85 lakh displaced individuals.
Manipur: 56,000+ Hit by Flash Floods
Flash floods triggered by breached embankments and overflowing rivers have affected more than 56,500 people in Manipur. Over 10,400 houses have been damaged, and thousands have been evacuated.
In Imphal East, the worst-hit region, a person was reported missing, and 2,913 people were moved to safety. Authorities have set up 57 relief camps, even as the state battles the aftermath of 93 landslides over the past five days.
Sikkim: Soldiers Dead and Missing Amid Landslides
In a tragic development, a landslide near Lachen town in Mangan district claimed the lives of three army personnel and left six others missing. The incident occurred amid incessant rainfall that has pounded the region.
The deceased were identified as Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur, and Porter Abhishek Lakhada. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the missing soldiers under treacherous conditions.
Meanwhile, 1,678 tourists stranded in Lachung and Chungthang have been safely evacuated, while efforts are underway to rescue over 100 others still stranded in Lachen, according to DGP Akshay Sachdeva.
