At least nine people lost their lives on Wednesday morning when a portion of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge collapsed in Padra taluka of Gujarat’s Vadodara district. The tragic incident occurred during peak traffic hours, sending multiple vehicles plunging into the Mahisagar (Mahi) River.
The collapsed bridge, a crucial link between the Anand and Vadodara districts, gave way suddenly, causing four vehicles—including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van—to fall into the river. The bridge is also a vital route for commuters traveling across Central Gujarat, including areas like Bharuch and Ankleshwar.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud cracking sound moments before the structure gave in. Emergency response teams including the fire brigade, local police, and district authorities promptly launched rescue efforts. Local residents also participated, helping pull the injured from the debris.
Three people were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, search operations continue in the river, with cranes deployed to lift the submerged vehicles. Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the structural failure.
Padra MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala visited the site to assess the situation. Locals have raised concerns over the bridge’s condition, alleging repeated warnings were ignored by the administration. Some even described the bridge as a known traffic hazard and a frequent site for suicides.
Senior Congress leader Amit Chavda shared his concerns on social media, urging immediate rescue operations and the arrangement of alternate routes to manage the disrupted traffic flow.
In the wake of the incident, a detailed technical assessment and safety audit of similar bridges in the region are expected to be carried out.
