Above-normal June rainfall to keep heat in check in most parts of India, says IMD

New Delhi/Mumbai, May 27, 2025
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday afternoon released a multi-hazard weather alert, forecasting intense weather conditions across several parts of the country. The warning includes heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places likely to witness extremely heavy showers in regions such as coastal and interior Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Following the onset of the southwest monsoon, Mumbai recorded substantial rainfall, bringing a brief pause in the early hours of Tuesday after enduring relentless showers earlier in the week. According to civic officials, the island city received an average of 106 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours. The heavy downpour on Monday had already signalled the arrival of the monsoon in the region.

Notably, South Mumbai experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall, recording more than 250 mm in just 13 hours leading up to 11 am on Monday, authorities confirmed.

Elsewhere, Kerala continued to reel under the impact of persistent rainfall on Tuesday, severely disrupting daily life. Train services faced delays, several low-lying regions were submerged, and road traffic was hampered across towns and villages. State officials reported that hundreds of residents, including individuals from remote tribal settlements, were evacuated and relocated to relief camps.

In the northern states, the weather department has also warned of adverse conditions. The local meteorological office in Himachal Pradesh forecasted rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms in various districts starting May 27. An orange alert has been issued for Shimla, Kullu, and Mandi on both May 27 and 28, while Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur districts are expected to be affected on May 27.

Authorities are urging residents in the impacted areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as unpredictable weather conditions persist.
